It is advised by most to keep a frequent check on the maintenance schedule in the car’s owners’ manual. An alternative is to look out for a set of common problems that occur in most cars.

Essential Fluids

The essential fluids of the car include:

  • Engine oil
  • Gear Oil/Transmission fluid
  • Brake oil
  • Power-steering fluid.

A simple and effective way to check these fluids is to check the ground in the area your car was parked on, for any possible leakages, every morning before leaving for

work. You should also make a habit of peeking into the bonnet and checking the dipstick for the engine oil level. Each of these fluids are vital for your car, and if they are low, can result in a loss of braking, steering shifting, and worst of all an engine seizure. If a leak is found get it checked promptly.

Tired brakes

Like Tires, Brakes also wear out over time, so it’s quite possible that you not notice your car has reduced braking power. Listen for squeaky noises as you brake. It is better to check regularly instead of waiting until you are in a panic situation where you must stop to learn you need new brakes. Check the brake fluid levels regularly. That sound of the brake is an indicator.

Underinflated or Worn-out tires

Tires should be checked on a weekly, if not regularly basis. You should check for signs of wear and tear, and also the pressure whenever you make a stop for gas. Even if the tire looks ok doesn’t necessarily mean it is. A worn out tire can lead to a leak in tire pressure or even a blow-out. Also, having low pressure or a worn in tires increases fuel consumption, and decreases road grip, each of which is not a good sign. Keeping such precautions can help prevent the hassle of a flat tire, and even an accident.

Worn steering and suspension

Steering and suspension are key components in making your car perform the way you want it to. A Lazy steering can result in a panic situation on a turn, if it doesn’t respond on time. All of this can result in the wearing of tires, accident risks, and more costly repairs.

I usually lease new cars every 3-4 years, meaning the car is under warranty. Keeping the tires rotated is crucial while you’re leasing cars because you don’t want to have to replace tires or brakes before the lease is up. Take care of the car and the only thing you’ll ever pay for is oil changes, which you can do yourself.
